Today I awoke early in the morning with indigestion. I was reminded of a bad reoccurring dream where a demon enters my house at night and destroys me. I wasn’t sure if it was an omen of things to come but as I went to my local precint to vote I was depressed and feeling reluctant to vote. I vote by my values, philosophy, and character and the candidate I voted for wasn’t very exciting or engaging. I had a feeling he wouldn’t win and by the time Tuesday evening rolled around I realized just how correct that feeling would turn out to be.
It is a sad way to start off and end such a historical day. Today our country elected our first black president. As I was gassing up my car black girls were walking along the street clanging bells and cheering for Obama. I watched students at Howard university celebrating, thousands of people in Chicago were a buzz with excitement, and most of the nation as well. It is odd to experience a historical event. I am reminded of the many times people ask each other where they were when JFK died, or MLK died, or when the civil rights movement occured. I guess I expected it to feel different, not sure what it would feel like but that it would be different.
Barak seems to have the appeal of Robert Kennedy and generates high expectations. I do wish him well and hope he achieves greatness regardless of what he does or does not accomplish in office. One of my favorite rappers, Tupac had a line in one of his songs - “we are not ready to see a black president”. This line has always stuck with me as reminder of our times. While I was born after the race riots, and most of the segregation that marked this nation for many years I am aware of how many in our society have held on to racist or bigoted ideas & values. With Barak Obama elected on the promise of change it seems Tupac was talking about a different time and a different America. It is today’s America that elected Barak Obama and not the America that Tupac talked about. I am glad we have embraced change and despite all that still needs to be done, I hope America continues to change for the better. And to quote Tupac once again "...we gotta keep making changes...".
