I am not a trekkie and am not into the sci fi genre too much (I like reading sci fi every now and then but not all the time and I don't watch any sci fi shows). I have seen Stat Trek twice!! I usually recommend seeing movies twice because there is so much to take in and it is easy to miss something which is the case with Star Trek. The movie is insanely fast paced, and despite being fast paced all characters are fairly easy to understand. Most of the story & charcater development that goes on is with Spock & James T Kirk (JTK) who are the main & most interesting characters despite a hugely talented and interesting cast. At points it seems like there are too many additional characters to follow but they aren't involved in many storey lines so even though the story is crowed with characters it isn't weighted down by all the characters.
The movie sets out to tell us the orgins of Spock & JTK as well as how they joined star fleet, meet, and became involved in the maiden voyage of the star ship Enterprise. While filled with comedy, little romance, suspense, drama, and plenty of action and speical effects the movie is suprisingly top notch in every area. It seems as though every thing was done incrediably well. While I didn't enjoy the humor as much the second time I did enjoy the story, the characters, and effects just as much maybe even more the second time.
I do recommend seeing it. The story telling is done in such a way that it appeals to anyone and everyone, especially those not familiar with the Star Trek series. While it isn't made specifically for Trekkies it does have many aspects of the Star Trek Universe that trekkies would enjoy...warp speed, toredos, characters beemed off & on the ship, as well as a variety of aliens.
What is interesting about this take on the series is how it gets away from a Star Trek universe. It seems to capture all the fun & excitment of the show but in a fresh and new way. Rarely was I thinking "There goes an extra from Star Trek". Each character has purpose and makes you feel what they are doing no matter if they are on screen once or twenty times. All in all I recommend it and encourage everyone to see it once.
