Lately

Where have I been lately…aside from addicted to facebook & working lots of hours, and of course I can be found in coffee shops & bookstores. Lately I have been soaking up those small moments that speak magical volumes.

Last week at a university I watched a co-worker of mine handle back to back demanding inquiries confidently like a professional with ten years of office experience. The truth is she has only worked in our office two years and when she started she was afraid of answering her phone. I watch her work two years later and think of how she has changed and I’m amazed at how people can grow.

In a pizza shop I watch a black man from the south with military training & upbringing talk with a Mongolian immigrant who speaks three languages fluently, I watch a young struggling musician talk about music with work class people adults who have no goals, purpose in life, or passions and a laid back good ol’ boy mechanic talk to a driven ambitious engineer and I realize as long as people have something to bring us together there is hope for democracy.

I watch a woman that at one second seems to capture everything I have ever wanted in soul mate and even though it was just a second, and even though we will only be friends and nothing more, she gives me hope of something better to come. She makes me believe in love again.

Yes amigos, this is where Duane has been. Like a fly on the wall watching life pass by with small tales of hope for humanity and dreams for tomorrow.
